Footprints underfoot

New beardog footprints have been discovered along the geological path. The exposed area has become uncovered again after the winter protection and  it is exhibited  along the left side of the study trail.
In the meantime excavation started under the walkway of the Conservation Hall, where uncovering of the paleosoil surface ended in early 1980.

In middle July 20 million-year-old footprints were found between the II. conservation building and the protective cellar on the geological trail, just bellow the pathway.

dr. Kordos László palaeontologist directs the research with the help of the Nógrád Geopark Association.

Lower Mioccene volcanis debris covered the footprinted sandstone and conserved the animal tracks. Beside rhinoceros and beardog footprints other, still unidentified animal tracks were found, the research is still going on.

The newly discovered 20 sq metre-large paleosurface is a proof for the visitors, that more fossil treasures are expected to be unveiled. In the meantime the excavation, which was abandoned in early 1980, under the walkway of the great conservation hall has restarted in January 2014. Under expert's direction formerly unemployed local workers did the hard work, where new discoveries are expected. It is good to know, that wherever we step, a vanished world is underfoot at Ipolytarnóc. Be cautious and aware of the past, be present when walking on our paths!
