The end of the year was peaceful in the crossborder Novohrad – Nógrád Geopark. Its continental climate made sure that peaceful snow blanket covered it, when out of blue, more exactly because of the snow, out of white, shocking news started to circulate!

The end of the year was peaceful in the crossborder Novohrad – Nógrád Geopark. Its continental climate made sure that peaceful snow blanket covered it, when out of blue, more exactly because of the snow, out of white, shocking news started to circulate!
Footprints of an enormous beast were discovered on the Hungarian side of the border, at Ipolytarnóc! That part of the border between Slovakia and Hungary was part of a green belt, a kind of ecological corridor for animals to come across, tracks of bear and lynx sometimes appear, but nothing as frightening as that huge footprint! The site itself, although a favourite geotourism destination, is closed in winter, no visitors intrude in this season there. The local ranger when patrolling, found the trace.
Scientists went to the spot, took a sample of it and after thorough investigation came to the conclusion, that the past came alive! The footprint belonged to a fearsome carnivore, an Amphycion!

They declared an emergency, for safety reasons nobody is to enter the area for a while, before further investigation takes place.
Yet the brave reporter of this article sneaked inside and after several days hardship, hiding in cover could discover in the so called Miocene-forest part of the site, that the dangers of the past are back again! The photos need no further comments.

We have to face with the reality, Ipolytarnóc is a great example, geoparks are special, dangerous to visit, they are the places, where the past can come alive!
